Today, we celebrate 35 years of global ozone layer protection! Without this layer, the energy emanating from our sun would be too strong for life on earth to flourish, so let’s take this day as an opportunity to recognize what we can achieve by working together on an international scale! But first a bit of background.

In the second half of the previous century, the scientific community came to the conclusion that the ozone layer is being depleted due to a number of commonly used chemicals entering our environment, ultimately leading to its destruction. Fortunately, this confirmation prompted the international community to establish a mechanism for cooperation to take action to protect the ozone layer. Ever since, industries across the globe (including our large clients) have been doing much effort to convert to a business model that does not consume those substances depleting this fragile shield of gas.

As of 16th September 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first treaties in the history of the UN to achieve universal ratification. They have halted the depletion of the ozone layer and allowed it to start recovering. Though much remains to be done to ensure a steady recovery, the enormous efforts undertaken to protect our ozone layer are proof that we can tackle huge challenges on an international scale if we work together.

At Tauw, monitoring emission to the air is one of our core businesses and working with our clients for a better environment is at the heart of our DNA.
